Importance of Leadership and Management in Nursing
Leadership and management are necessary for influencing subordinates to achieve organizational goals through motivation and encouragement to outperform their selves by performing beyond their expectations. For example, transformational leaders inspire to change for the better, which is done through making more efforts than usual (Bradley University, 2016). Good leaders and managers using this style put the interest of their organization ahead of their personal needs. For example, the mission of a hospital facility is to enhance the delivery of high-quality care to patients and increase patient satisfaction levels. Nursing managers using the transformational leadership style who prioritize patient needs are charismatic to influence their subordinates to achieve goals guided by their leader’s vision (Whitehead, Weiss, & Tappen, 2010). In short, the nurse leader will aim at improving skills and competencies of followers to reach set objectives. Therefore, management and leadership in nursing help satisfy needs of patients by empowering the nursing staff to perform their functions effectively.
Effective nursing leaders and managers welcome the ideas of other people to propel the health organization forward. According to the Bradley University (2016), those who use the democratic leadership style encourage their team members to speak up and contribute to making decisions. In such a case, management creates an open system of communication where employees feel free to share their opinions concerning the provision of care. Whitehead et al. (2010) explain that managers should practice skillful communication that embraces active listening to others, motivation to exchange valuable information, and provide a feedback for further improvement. Apart from effective communication skills, respect for others should be upheld for their contributions to be incorporated in decisions (Whitehead et al., 2010). Workers receive their personal responsibilities and a necessary feedback on performance to enhance adjustments and improvements (Bradley University, 2016). The primary focus is on improving the quality of processes and systems, but not finding errors committed by subordinates. Therefore, nursing management and leadership enhance collective work between subordinates and their managers in making a contribution towards the success of an organization due to the value associated with their duties.
Furthermore, nursing leadership and management help in ensuring that the nursing staff upholds procedures and systems set forth by the institution. Leadership should be of high integrity that manifests itself through trustworthy and law-abiding behaviors (Whitehead et al., 2010). The transactional leadership style further ensures that nursing staff members comply with institutional system rules through punishments and rewards (Bradley University, 2016). Such a thing means that managers should initiate reward or punishment processes depending on individual performance. According to the Bradley University (2016), this leadership style focuses majorly on supervising subordinates and improving group performance by finding deviations and correcting them. This style is useful in completing highly detailed tasks and managing crises. Therefore, leadership and management in nursing enhance the ability of the staff to abide by set rules and procedures through identifying and correcting errors.
Furthermore, leadership and management in nursing are essential in the provision of directions during emergency scenarios. Leaders and managers can utilize the authoritarian leadership style to compel the staff to take precise actions to eliminate problems created by emergency occurrences to return the situation back to normal (Bradley University, 2016). These managers should possess outstanding decision-making skills, be critical thinkers, and have optimism to work in stressful situations, particularly during crises (Whitehead et al., 2010). It is easy to get discouraged if managers lack these qualities. Authoritarian leadership skills are essential because the role of the leader is to make decisions, while that of the nursing staff is to implement what the management has decided. The communication expertise is critical in informing subordinates of decisions made and an appropriate action that should be undertaken during emergencies when a fast response is needed (Bradley University, 2016). Therefore, nursing leadership and management are critical in providing directions for subordinates during emergency scenarios when the time for making collective decisions is unavailable.
