What About the Nurse Executive?

Nursing competencies are used in the daily execution of medical services, and the extent to which they are applied determines the success or failure of the medical institution. Therefore, this essay illustrates how my chief nurse executive demonstrates his expertise in discharging daily nursing duties using the competence of professionalism. The latter has different components that the chief nurse executive uses to ensure and manage quality healthcare provision in the medical facility, including accountability, ethics, advocacy and career planning.

Accountability

My chief nurse executive is specialized in the administration and management of nursing issues, being a professional in the field (Finkelman, 2012). In this regard, he applies accountability in the execution of daily tasks because this competence provides direction on how to manage, administrate and account for all issues in the medical facility in the most professional manner. Working on the management level, he applies the competence in ensuring the effective running of the nursing facility. Therefore, being a manager in charge of nursing operations, he uses the competence of professionalism to manage nurses and organize their duties in the entity.

Ethics

My chief nurse executive relies on professional ethics when undertaking the administrative and nursing roles to ensure that decisions made are in line with AMA’s Code of Medical Ethics (American Medical Association, n.d.). Such position is very important for the health facility because, the chief nurse makes decisions with a view on how health and nursing services can be applied in a humane way (American Medical Association, n.d.). As a nursing practitioner, especially occupying the position of the chief nursing executive, he is part of the committee that ensures adherence to ethical practices in the medical facility. It is because any practice to be adopted by the healthcare facility has to be in accordance with nursing ethics and laws (Finkelman, 2012). The chief nursing executive ensures that the management of the medical facility is carried out following moral requirements of the federal system. Being a nursing officer with a deep understanding of the ethical law, he is a chief advisor in the health facility. It is because every action and decision he makes is evaluated to be in line with what the moral law stipulates (American Medical Association, n.d.).

Advocacy

The chief nurse executive uses the competence of advocacy to provide constant advices to his staff and advocate for their rights. He is endowed with the in-depth knowledge of the rights of patients, their relatives and attending nurses in the facility. His role in the hospital’s board is to advice the committee on how to handle needs of nurses and advocate for them during decision-making. Moreover, he is a specialist in nursing issues and uses this competence to carry out an evaluation of adherence to the rights of the involved parties (Finkelman, 2012).

Career Planning

Using this competence, the chief nursing executive plans the advancement of careers of serving nurses through assessing the cost of educating the latter further and comparing possible gains in terms of career development after nurses will have completed further studies. His work in this case is to plan and analyze how such training will influence service delivery, quality of nursing services and career advancement. His analysis is always relayed to the committee to facilitate proper decision-making on training issues (Finkelman, 2012). It shows professionalism of the chief nurse executive in career planning.

Conclusion

The chief nursing executive is an administrative professional that uses his position at the health facility to enforce and achieve accountability, adherence to ethics, advocate for the rights of patients, their families and nurses, as well as to implement career planning. Therefore, he identifies the strengths and weaknesses of the medical facility and exploits potential opportunities. It shows that the position accorded to him entails competent planning and forecasting the development of the healthcare facility on behalf of nurses.
